Meetha Pur Dangal

By Deepak Ansuia Prasad

ENGLISH VERSION

In India, wrestling competitions are a common sight at local festivals. On the occasion of Janamshtmi, the birthday of Lord Krishna, a huge traditional dangal was organised by the people of Badarpur, Meethapur, Moladband, Aali, and neighbouring villages. This is one of the oldest annual dangals in the region and it is very well organized, with a big wrestling arena, sound system, seating, and a big stage tent for guests and dignitaries to watch. The dangal committee got good sponsors to distribute cash prizes among the wrestlers so it became a huge competition.

Wrestling in India is on the rise. This could be seen by the number of participants in the competition. I could count more than a thousand wrestlers, so there was a lot of jostling to get matches for all the wrestlers.

My friend Suraj Pahlwan also came to compete. He is teaching all his three children the sport of wrestling, including his daughter, who Suraj brought along hoping she would find another girl to wrestle, but there weren’t any. So it was decided that she would be allowed to challenge a boy. Before long, she found a boy to take up the challenge and the two squared off. He seemed to think he would beat her easily and he started out the match in a dominant position. He took her down and put her on her back. He almost had her pinned when she turned his momentum against him and flipped him over. He struggled to get off his back, but she drove his shoulders into the ground, pinning him. It was an amazing sight. The male wrestler was totally stunned and the crowd cheered the girl’s victory and gave her a garland of money and cash prizes.

The competition went on until sunset, and the last match was between Vikram of Guru Jasram and Varun of Railway Akhada. Varun seemed to dominate Vikram, who kept on moving out of bounds, so the match was decided in the favour of Varun.

Nishant, another wrestler from Guru Jasaram, was making a comeback after a long absence from wrestling. He was up against a wrestler named Hitesh and the two battled for quite a while, with Nishant having the upper hand for most of the bout. But the light was fading and the match was eventually called off.

At the end of the day, the dangal committee honored every guru, coach, and guest – including me. I thanked them for inviting me and congratulated them on such a successful event.
