By Deepak Ansuia Prasad

ENGLISH VERSION

It is difficult to find a single person in the wrestling fraternity of India who does not know about Guru Badri Akhada. Situated at Ghantaghar sabji mandi (meaning clockhouse vegetable market), it is one of the important and oldest wrestling schools in Delhi.
I have a wrestler friend named Vinod Pahlwan from Patla Kheda Delhi in Uttar Pardesh, who invited me to visit the akhada and I am very much thankful for his help. Also I was in touch with Hind Kesri Raju Pahlwan, the renowned wrestler of the akhada. Raju Pahlwan became Delhi Kesri at an early age, defeating almost all the biggest wrestlers of his time.
Accompanying me on my visit was an American wrestler named Timothy Foley. Tim and his friend Mark Lovejoy, who I met during his visit India, run a website called Wrestling Roots. (Click here to visit the Wrestling Roots website.) They document different styles of wrestling all around the world and Tim wanted to experience the traditional Indian style of wrestling.
It was raining during Tim’s visit, but Guru Badri Akhada has an indoor wrestling pit and very good facilities in general. We were also joined by Jeetu Pahlwan, his father Rajinder Pahlwan, Guru Haripal Pahlwan. Raju Pahlwan, Vinod and the coach of the akhada all welcomed us.
We visited the whole akhara which housed rooms for wrestlers, a mat practice hall, on the first floor and mud wrestling arena at the ground. There is a beautiful statue of Hanuman ji on the wall and a small temple with statues of lord Ram, Sita, Laxman and other gods.
Jeetu got a chance to practice with Birju Pahlwan and then Tim joined in, training with Jeetu and also Akash Pahlwan of Nathupur, who is currently a student at Guru Hanuman Akhada.
The akhada has a long and illustrious history. Guru Badri was born in 1914 in a village called Karora near Khurja Bulandshahar in Uttar Pradesh. He learned the art of wrestling from his father Kundan Lal and his grandfather.
Then he came to Delhi and studied wrestling at Deena ka Talab Akhada. There he honed his skills and went everywhere in the country to wrestle in dangals, earning prizes and respect for himself. Once he defeated Bheema Pahlwan who was the best wrestler of his time. In 1927 he started his own akhada at Sabzi Mandi Ghanta Ghar and started teaching students the art of kushti.
There he taught some of the great wrestlers of the time, including Moti Pahlwan, Ajaib Pahlwan and Bale Pahwlan. In later years, the akhada would turn out champions like Jagdish Mitar, Bharat Kesri Murari Lal Verma, Anand Rai and Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Kesri Vijay Kumar, who also become Bharat Kesri title holder later in his life.
Other notable wrestlers from the akhada are Delhi Kesri international wrestler Omi Pahlwan, international wrestler Rajinder Prasad, inter-university champion Jagdish Sethi, Hind Kesri Raju Pahlwan, Delhi Kesri Birju Pahlwan.
The wrestling school become famous internationally and many wrestlers from other countries came here to learn kushti. A contingent from Pakistan used to come regularly. And the famous Dara Singh and Tiger Joginder Singh also used to practice here.
Guru Badri sons, Bijli, Jagan, Raghu and Lalla Pahlwan all became great wrestlers and earned fame for the akhada and the country.
Guru Badri used to spend most of his income on the upkeep of the akhada, and devoted himself to the akhada and his wrestlers, thus earning great respect as a guru. He also started mat wrestling in his akhada to teach his pupils freestyle wrestling.
The great guru died on 27th November 1994. Since the, his son Lalla Pahlwan has been carrying on his legacy and presently there are more than 100 wrestlers being trained here. Many great personalities, ministers and dignitaries have visited the akhada, but unfortunately no one has come forward to help with the basics, like maintaining the facilities and paying for a coach. However, Lalla Pahlwan is hopes the day will come when the government or sports federation will look into it. Right now he himself is looking after everything like his father.
